Background

ABC Radio Sydney, on 702 kHz AM, is the flagship of the ABC's local radio network. It is one of Australia's oldest stations: it opened in November 1923 as 2SB and became 2BL when Broadcasters Limited took over. It was among the first stations the ABC took on when the national broadcaster began in 1932. Around the turn of the century it was renamed 702 ABC Sydney, and in 2017 it became ABC Radio Sydney.

The station carries talk, interviews and local news for Sydney and the Blue Mountains, and many other ABC local stations in New South Wales share its programs outside their own local shows. Its AM signal comes from a 50 kW transmitter at Prestons, about 30 km west of the city centre, the highest power allowed in Australia. It marked 100 years on air in November 2023.
