Background
ABC NewsRadio is the all-news radio network of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It first went to air on 15 August 1994 under a different name, the Parliamentary and News Network, and it grew out of the ABC's long-standing duty to put parliament on the radio, a duty that dates back to 1946.
That history still shapes the schedule. When the House of Representatives or the Senate is sitting, the chamber is carried live and regular programming steps aside. The rest of the time the network runs news around the clock from the ABC's newsrooms, and it also relays BBC World Service programming at times. Darwin joined in 1997, which put it in every capital city, and a 24-hour format with an online stream began in 2001.
