Background
3AW is Melbourne's news and talkback station on 693 kHz AM, owned by Tapt Media. It went to air in 1932 as the city's fifth commercial station, and its call sign comes from its founders: the AW stands for Allans Music and the theatre company J C Williamson, with newspaper publisher David Syme as the third partner. The first studio was inside His Majesty's Theatre, and the 1932 licence required a weekly Catholic program, The Catholic Hour, which ran until the 1990s.
The station has moved along the AM dial several times, from 1425 kHz to 1280 in 1935 and 1278 in 1978, and to 693 kHz on 1 May 2006 when it swapped with its sister station Magic to improve reception. Its signal comes from a transmitter at Werribee. Ownership has passed from Macquarie to Fairfax and Nine and now to Tapt Media, which also owns 2GB in Sydney. Long-running programs include the nostalgia show Remember When, and football coverage that goes back to 1953.
