Background
ABC Radio Australia is the ABC's international radio service, and one of its oldest. Prime Minister Robert Menzies opened the ABC's shortwave broadcasts on 20 December 1939, soon after the Second World War began, partly to answer enemy propaganda aimed at the region. By 1945 the service was broadcasting in 15 languages, and for decades it reached Asia and the Pacific mainly on shortwave.
The last shortwave broadcasts to the Pacific ended in January 2017. Today the service is heard on FM transmitters in seven Pacific island countries and online, mostly in English, with some Tok Pisin and a daily news bulletin in French. The ABC now publishes its content for the region under the ABC Pacific and ABC Asia names, and in December 2024 it marked 85 years of international broadcasting.
