Background
Radio National is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's national talk and ideas network. Its roots go back to Sydney station 2FC, which made a test broadcast on 5 December 1923 and went to air officially in January 1924. The ABC bought 2FC in 1937 and tied it to stations in other capitals. From 1947 to 1985 the network was called ABC Radio 2, and in 1985 it took the name Radio National.
The schedule centres on current affairs, arts, science, social issues, drama and comedy, with long-running programs such as Late Night Live and The Science Show. It is carried on AM and FM, DAB+, digital television and online, and most programs can be heard again as podcasts. The ABC rebranded it as RN in 2012 and went back to the Radio National name in January 2025, when it also reshaped its weekday schedule.
