Background
FBi is Sydney's independent, not-for-profit community station for youth, music and arts, on 94.5 FM, and it now trades online as fbi.radio. It began test broadcasts in 1995 and won a permanent licence in 2002 against 16 other hopefuls, and it went full time on 29 August 2003. Its founding promise is that at least half the music is Australian, and at least half of that comes from Sydney.
Almost everyone on air is a volunteer. The signal reaches from Katoomba to Gosford and Wollongong, and the station is also on DAB+ in Sydney. A second station, FBi Click, ran for dance and electronic music from 2014 to 2017, and a 2009 "Save FBi" campaign raised close to $500,000 from listeners. The station also runs the public-voted Sydney Music, Arts & Culture (SMAC) Awards.
