Background

Triple R, written 3RRR, is Melbourne's best-known community radio station, and it runs largely on listener money. It began in May 1976 as 3RMT, the educational station of RMIT, started test broadcasts on 102.7 MHz in November 1976 and was given a permanent licence in 1978 under the new public broadcasting rules. In 1979 it took the name 3RRR, and it has been based in Brunswick East since the station bought its premises in 2004.

Everyone on air except the paid Breakfasters team is a volunteer, and the station reports about 17,000 paid subscribers. There is no fixed playlist: roughly 70% of the schedule is specialist music and 30% talk, spread over more than 60 programs that range from punk and hip hop to jazz and country. Triple R has been on DAB+ since 2010, opened a live performance space in 2009 and was inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame in 2016.
