Background
JOY 94.9 is Melbourne's LGBTIQA+ community radio station and, by its own account, Australia's first and only one. The group behind it was incorporated on 28 June 1993 and made its first test broadcast on 1 December 1993, World AIDS Day, on 90.7 MHz from a small studio above a hardware store in South Melbourne. It was one of four Melbourne community groups to win a full-time licence in 2001, and it went full time on 94.9 MHz in January 2002.
Presenters are unpaid volunteers, and the schedule mixes music of all kinds with talk, news and current affairs, including a weekly news feed shared with other community stations. JOY moved to Bourke Street in 2008 and to the Victorian Pride Centre in St Kilda in 2021, and in August 2022 the organisation announced it would trade as JOY Media, with the radio station as its broadcasting arm. It is also on DAB+ in Melbourne.
