Background

Smooth 95.3 is Sydney's easy-listening and adult-contemporary station, owned by Nova Entertainment. It started on 1 August 2005 as Vega 95.3, became Classic Rock 95.3 in March 2010, and relaunched as smoothfm on 21 May 2012, with singer Michael Bublé as its first announcer. The new format was built around a mood, relaxed and familiar music, instead of an era or a genre.

It took a few years to pay off. In August 2015 it was named Sydney's number one FM station for the first time, and in the last ratings survey of 2025 it led the whole Sydney market with a 13.0 share. Nova 96.9 is its sister station in Sydney, and the Smooth brand also runs in Melbourne on 91.5 FM and on digital radio in other cities.
