Background
The Sound is a New Zealand classic rock network. It began on 13 October 1997 in Auckland as Solid Gold FM, and relaunched as The Sound at 9 am on 1 January 2012. The change filled a gap, because rival networks Classic Hits and Radio Hauraki had moved to newer music and left little room for rock from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Its programme director described the plan as timeless rock in a clutter-free, no-hype setting.
The Sound is carried on about 31 FM locations and in the rova app, and in May 2025 it held a 5.9% share of the national commercial audience, sixth among the networks. It is owned by MediaWorks, and in August 2026 MediaWorks' radio business was announced as sold to Australia's Sports Entertainment Group, so ownership may change.
