Background
Newstalk ZB is New Zealand’s national news and talk radio network, run by NZME Radio. Its Wellington service is on 1035 AM and 89.3 FM. The ZB name goes back to 1926, when the first of the family, 1ZB, started in Auckland. Wellington’s station was the one once known as 2ZB.
For decades the ZB stations were music stations. In 1987 they were relaunched as talkback radio, and by 1993 to 1994 the network had settled on the name Newstalk ZB. Radio New Zealand sold its commercial radio business in 1996, and the ZB stations passed to The Radio Network. Most programmes are now made in Auckland, with news hubs in Wellington, Christchurch and Parliament.
