Background
The Rock is New Zealand's mainstream rock network. It began as The Rock 93FM in Hamilton on 1 December 1991, with AC/DC's "Are You Ready?" as its first song, broadcasting from the basement of Radio New Zealand's Hamilton building. Through the 1990s it spread to other regions, moved its main base to Auckland in 1999 and now covers almost every New Zealand market. MediaWorks is its owner, and the station aims at listeners aged 25 to 44.
Its yearly event is The Rock 2000, a four-week countdown of the 2,000 biggest rock songs chosen by listener votes, which ends with a live show in Auckland. Metallica has won the countdown the most times, 11. The long-running breakfast show is The Morning Rumble. In 2026 The Rock began reaching Australian listeners through Nova's apps and on DAB+ in Brisbane and Melbourne, and in August 2026 MediaWorks' radio business was announced as sold to Australia's Sports Entertainment Group.
